Description

Soft vanilla custard cake squares with a creamy interior and a crackly burnt sugar finish. An easy, nostalgic dessert made with simple pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale

2 large eggs

½ cup granulated sugar

½ cup milk

¼ cup vegetable oil

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1¼ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

2 tablespoons granulated sugar (for topping)

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a square baking pan.

2. Whisk eggs and sugar until pale.

3. Add milk, oil, and vanilla and mix well.

4. Whisk in flour and baking powder until just combined.

5. Pour batter into prepared pan.

6. Bake 25–30 minutes until just set.

7. Sprinkle sugar over top and return to oven 5–7 minutes to caramelize.

8. Cool completely before slicing.

Notes

Do not overbake to maintain custard texture.

Let cool fully for clean slices.

Broil briefly for deeper caramel if desired.
