Description

A moist chocolate fudge cake studded with chocolate chips and pecans, served warm with a quick hot fudge sauce made from sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, and cream.

Ingredients

Scale

For the cake: 1 box (about 15.25 ounces) chocolate fudge cake mix

3 large eggs

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1 cup unsweetened applesauce

1/4 cup water

1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

For the hot fudge sauce: 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk

1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan.

2. In a large bowl, beat the cake mix, eggs, oil, applesauce, and water on low for 30 seconds, then on medium for 2 minutes, until smooth.

3. Fold in 1 cup chocolate chips and the pecans, if using. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.

4. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. Cool in the pan for 15 minutes.

5. For the sauce, combine the sweetened condensed milk and 1 cup chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring in between, until the chips melt and the sauce is smooth.

6. Stir in the heavy cream and vanilla until glossy. Serve the cake warm with the hot fudge sauce spooned over each slice.

Notes

Original Poulef recipe adapted from the published Betty Crocker Triple-Fudge Cake (chocolate fudge cake mix, oil, applesauce, eggs, chocolate chips, and pecans, served with a fudge sauce of sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, and cream). The full amounts were not readable from the source, so quantities here follow standard cake-mix proportions and the recipe has not been tested.

Pecans are optional and can be left out for a nut-free cake.

Store leftover sauce in the refrigerator and rewarm gently before serving.
