Description

These Soft Buttery Dinner Rolls are fluffy, tender, and golden with a rich buttery flavor. Made with warm milk, melted butter, yeast, and a simple homemade dough, they are perfect for Sunday dinners, holidays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, soups, sandwiches, and family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 tablespoons instant yeast

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 1/4 cups warm milk

6 tablespoons butter, melted

1 large egg

Extra melted butter, for brushing after baking

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt.

2. Add the warm milk, melted butter, and egg. Stir until a soft dough forms.

3. Knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes by hand or 5 to 7 minutes with a stand mixer until smooth and elastic.

4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until doubled in size.

5. Gently press down the dough and divide it into 16 to 20 equal pieces.

6. Shape each piece into a smooth ball and arrange the rolls in a lightly greased 9×13-inch baking dish.

7. Cover and let the rolls rise again until puffy, about 30 to 45 minutes.

8. Preheat the oven to 375°F.

9. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.

10. Brush the hot rolls generously with melted butter.

11. Cool for a few minutes and serve warm.

Notes

Keep the milk warm rather than hot so the yeast remains active.

Avoid adding too much flour because a soft dough produces softer dinner rolls.

The first rise may take longer in a cool kitchen; rely on the dough doubling in size rather than the clock.

For shiny golden tops, brush the shaped rolls lightly with egg wash before baking.

For an especially soft, buttery finish, brush the rolls with melted butter immediately after baking.

Store cooled rolls in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months.

Reheat frozen or room-temperature rolls gently in a 300°F oven until warm.
