Description

A moist yellow cake with chopped pecans in the batter, covered while warm with a gooey praline topping of butter, brown sugar, sweetened condensed milk and toasted pecans.

Ingredients

Scale

For the cake: 1 box (about 15.25 oz) yellow cake mix

3 large eggs

1 cup whole milk (in place of the water on the box)

1/2 cup (113 g) unsalted butter, melted (in place of the oil on the box)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup finely chopped pecans

For the praline topping: 1/2 cup (113 g) unsalted butter

1/2 cup packed light brown sugar

1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 cups chopped pecans, lightly toasted

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9 x 13 inch baking pan and line it with parchment paper.

2. In a large bowl, beat the cake mix, eggs, milk, melted butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla for about 2 minutes, until smooth.

3. Fold in the 1/2 cup finely chopped pecans and spread the batter into the pan.

4. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, following the timing on the cake mix box (usually about 28 to 33 minutes).

5. While the cake bakes, melt 1/2 cup butter with the brown sugar in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until smooth.

6. Stir in the sweetened condensed milk and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture is hot, thickened slightly and bubbling gently, about 4 to 5 minutes.

7. Remove from the heat and stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla, the salt and the toasted pecans.

8. Poke holes all over the warm cake with the handle of a wooden spoon and spoon the warm praline topping evenly over the top.

9. Let the cake cool for at least 1 hour so the topping sets, then cut into squares and serve.

Notes

No source with exact amounts could be opened. This recipe follows the common cake-mix pecan praline method (yellow cake mix with pecans, a warm butter and sweetened condensed milk topping with pecans spread over the warm cake), with milk and melted butter in place of water and oil for a richer cake, and the amounts were developed for Poulef. It is untested, so test it once before publishing.

Toast the pecans for 5 to 7 minutes at 350°F for the best flavor.
