This is the best Southern cornbread recipe with a crispy golden crust and tender center. Made in a hot cast iron skillet, it’s savory, buttery, and perfect for any comfort meal.
Ingredients
1 cup yellow cornmeal
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1½ cups buttermilk
2 large eggs
¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
2 tablespoons vegetable oil or bacon grease
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and heat skillet with oil.
2. Whisk cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
3. Whisk buttermilk, eggs, and melted butter.
4. Combine wet and dry ingredients.
5. Pour batter into hot skillet.
6. Bake 18-22 minutes until golden.
7. Cool slightly before slicing.
Notes
Use cast iron for best crust.
Do not overmix batter.
Traditional Southern cornbread is not sweet.
Store airtight up to 2 days.
