Description

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 tablespoon ground ginger

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon ground cloves

¼ teaspoon salt

½ cup unsalted butter

1 cup brown sugar

1 cup molasses

2 large eggs

1 cup hot water


Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F and prepare baking pan.

2. Whisk flour, baking soda, spices, and salt together.

3. Cream butter and brown sugar until fluffy.

4. Beat in molasses and eggs one at a time.

5. Alternate adding dry ingredients and hot water.

6. Pour batter into pan and bake 35–40 minutes.

7. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Use unsulfured molasses for best flavor.

Do not overmix the batter.

Cake tastes even better the next day.
